What region is best for you?
Discover what regions offer you the experiences you're dreaming of.
Friuli
Venezia Giulia
Do you want to discover an untouristed region with a fascinating
blend of cultures that are reflected in the cuisine, wonderful wines
and a variety of lovely landscapes? Yes? Friuli Venezia Giulia is
for you!
Friuli
Venezia Giulia is north east of Venice with Slovenia to the east,
Austria to the north and the Veneto region to the southwest. Its
culture, cities and cuisine reflect a mix of Italian, Slavic and
Austrian influences.
This region offers you beaches on the Adriatic, forests with walking
paths, mountains in the Alps for skiing, beautiful wine country
hills, Roman ruins, castles, villas and interesting cities.
Cities
Udine has a Venetian flavour in the architecture of its palace and
tower and Tiepolo paintings in a few buildings and enjoys great
views of hills and the Alps.
Trieste, a port
just over the border of the former Yugoslavia has been a cross road
of many cultures for centuries. It has a Middle European feel with
a particularly beautiful setting, combining the whiteness of its
wild rocks, the blue sea and the surrounding green hills.

Cuisine
A few years ago, I heard Fred Plotkin, long time food author, resident
of Italy and author of "La Terra Fortunata: The Splendid Food
& Wine of Italy's Great Undiscovered Region" (Friuli Venezia
Giulia) say the best food in Italy was in the Riviera, Emilia-Romagna
and Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the best wines of Italy in Piedmont,
Tuscany and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The region’s
cuisine mixes middle European, seafood, mountain fare and Italian
with dishes like: potato gnocchi with plums, minestra with beans,
potatoes and sauerkraut, fish soup served with white polenta, frico
(a crisp cup of Montasio cheese with soft polenta and sautéed
pancetta inside) and strudel.
You’ll savour the famous San
Daniele prosciutto and genuine peasant dishes based on grains, pasta,
beans, leafy greens, polenta, cheeses, sausages, game dishes and
sweet desserts like Gubana, an exquisite cake with a filling of
dry fruit and grappa.
Wines
Friuli’s wines rival those in Piedmont and Tuscany with world
class wines in eight DOC areas. The region makes some of Italy’s
finest white wines Tocai Friulano, Verduzzo Friulano, Pinot Grigio,
Ribolla Gialla, and the rare and precious Picolit, a famous "meditation
wine", as well as robust red wines like Cabernet, Schiopettino,
Refosco and Merlot.
