    magnificent Barolo wine valleys
    of gentle hills

Join Mama Margaret & Friends for an unforgettable exploration of sights, tastes and smells and truly welcoming local people in this cooking and wine adventure tour in Piedmont in north west Italy. In this exquisite countryside dotted with beautiful hill towns, you can drink some of Italy's top red wines, including the celebrated Barolo and Barbaresco.

With its gently rolling hills covered with vineyards, fields and forests, the tranquility of the countryside will soothe and revitalize you. You rediscover simple pleasures of good food, good wine and beautiful landscapes.

You gather with local chefs to learn authentic Piemonte secrets from their farmhouse kitchens and restaurants. One cooking lesson is at the Hotel Real Castello in Verduno, where you stay. Once the summer home of King Carlo Alberto in the 1840s, Real Castello transports you to another era with country style rooms, quiet gardens and magnificent views of the countryside and Alps.

hazelnut and chocolate cake with zabaglione

In the Real Castello’s kitchen, you make typical Piemonte dishes like onion tart, risotto pink with Barolo, guinea hen with rosemary and desserts like a delicate chocolate and hazelnut cake topped with zabaglione or bunet, a cocoa pudding with crushed amaretti biscuits. In the evening, you eat your creations in the frescoed dining room.

    drinking Barolo with Massimo
    Martinelli of the Ratti winery

You visit a variety of great wineries, some small and intimate, others large and famous. At the Ratti family winery, gregarious, humorous co-owner and author Massimo regales you with stories of wine making in the old days, fascinating information on the soils, grapes and more and takes you on a private tour of their wine museum in an abbey where monks made wine in 1162.

In lush, high green hills blanketed with nut trees, in a little town you step into a bakery famous for its chocolate cakes. The well known artisan baker shows you his secrets to make sachertorte, chocolate truffles and hazelnut cake.

    cheese maker with cheeses
    for lunch

Also in the high lands, you visit an artisan cheese maker on his farm, a man passionate about his organic sheep and cow cheeses. You meet the sheep, visit his cheese making room and sample his cheeses in a divine picnic.

In a hamlet surrounded by hills of vineyards four km out of Alba, you'll stay in a friendly B & B with six modern rooms each with a private bathroom. Your local host welcomes you in the lounge every morning and serves you a delicious continental breakfast. In fine weather, you may enjoy breakfast or a quiet read on the patio or lawn.
