Cooking School Tours in Piedmont

stuffed roasted peppers in Piedmont

Up in Italy’s northwest corner, with France to the west and Switzerland to the north, Piedmont lies off the main tourist tracks.

South of its capital, Turin, the breathtakingly beautiful, gentle series of hills of vineyards attract thousands of wine and food lovers in the know. This land produces Barolo and Barbaresco, some of Italy’s top reds on par with Tuscany’s Brunello, as well as aromatic white truffles, sweet peppers, hazel nuts and chocolate.

The first weekend of Alba’s famous truffle fair in October, before you visit truffle vendors, watch the donkey race. Riders in medieval costumes compete on donkeys who clearly do not want to be there. Hilarious!

Piedmont also offers excellent mid range reds like Barbera and Nebbiolo and younger, fruity Dolcetto. Winery people welcome you warmly and love telling you about their wines as you drink them together. Soon feel they like new friends.

Hikers on wine country pathways feel enchanted with the stunning panoramas of quilted hills, some topped with imposing 1000 year old castles and quaint little towns. Peace and beauty calm your soul.

Piedmont cuisine: a wonderful variety of hot and cold appetizers like spinach flan with fonduta sauce, risotto pink with Barolo, a veal roll with a rich gravy of Barolo, herbs and vegetables, chocolate and hazel nut cake with Moscato wine zabaglione.
