Sicily
On the east coast, gorgeous Taormina hugs the hills. At its well preserved Greek theatre, you see outstanding views across the bay and Mount Etna.
Taormina is full of fine clothing shops. Its bakery windows stuffed with citrus, almond and other delights stop foodies in their tracks.
Little Linguaglossa, with its blackish volcanic rock buildings, is a Mount Etna town with few foreigners so you get a feel for a real Sicilian town.
In Mount Etna’s foot hills, you walk for two or three hours on volcanic sand paths, around lava flows and craters, through forests. Views go to mainland Italy. A unique landscape!
Aeolian island, Stromboli off Sicily’s north east coast, is a visual buffet: white houses, gardens of colourful, exotic plants, black sand beaches, green and brown mountain with a live volcano. Hike 900 meters to the top to watch the volcano explode into the night sky every 15 minutes or watch entranced from a restaurant patio above the sea.
Southeast Sicily, especially Noto, is famous for its Baroque architecture. In picturesque Modica terraces of medieval and Baroque buildings go up hills on sides of a gorge. Modica is renowned for its chocolate—enjoy your tasting at a famous shop.
Sample dishes: peperonata with peppers, capers, vinegar, sugar, pasta with swordfish, meatballs cooked in lemon leaves, semifreddo with almonds and chocolate sauce.
Wines
Wines of local grapes like Nero d’Avola, and volcanic Etna wines captivate wine lovers.
